The origin of Ramayana
It was a bunch of curses that made Lord Vishnu to take the avataram (form) of a mere mortal and experience all the joys and agonies a human being undergoes on earth.
1) Once Lord Vishnu visited Brahmaloka, the abode of Lord Brahma. Along with Goddess Saraswati, and his mind born sons, the Kumaras, Lord Brahma came to welcome Lord Vishnu from Vaikuntha. Lord Brahma had a mind-born son called SanatKumara who also happened to be there along with his father. SanatKumara noticed Lord Vishnu but did not go and greet him. He stood silently. Lord Vishnu addressed Sanatkumara, "Your ignorance makes you forsake your desires for fear of rebirth. You must be born as Sara-Janma to be troubled with desires, Sanatkumara."
In return, Sanatkumara denounced Vishnu by saying, "Even as all discerning you are, you shall have to sacrifice your omniscience for some time and live as an ignorant mortal."
2) Sage Bhrigu had returned to his home to find that his wife had been killed by Lord Vishnu with his Sudarshana Chakra because she offered the Asuras, her guests, protection from the onslaught of Devas who came to kill them. He cursed Vishnu to be deprived of his wife which is exactly what happened in Ramayana. Sage Bhrigu was able to revive his wife with some sacred mantras eventually.
3) Vrinda was the wife of a ferocious Asura who was tormenting the three worlds. The asura's power came only because of Vrinda's chastity. In order to weaken the asura, Lord Vishnu came in the guise of the asura himself prompting Vrinda to hug him. At that moment, she loses her chastity. She cursed him to be deprived of his wife. The devas win the war by killing the asura and Vrinda kills herself in a yogic fire.
4) Once Lord Narada was attacked repeatedly by the Lord of Love, Kamadeva who wants to destroy Narada's penance. Kamadenu fails miserably to disturb the penance and in shame apologizes profusely to Narada. Pride overcomes Narada who narrates this to Lord Vishnu to show off his power. Using his magic to pull a prank on Narada in order to teach him a lesson in humility, Lord Vishnu creates a nonexistent kingdom with the most beautiful princess who is getting ready for swayamwara so she could marry a prince that she liked. Narada falls into the trap and being a renunciate falls in love with the extraordinarily beautiful princess. To impress her, Narada asks Lord Vishnu to convert his face into that of Hari so the princess would only pick him. Hari also means monkey and Narada doesn't realize the trick played on him. He has an old, wrinkly monkey face which gets rejected by the princess. Lord Vishnu walks into the swayamwara and the princess garlands him. The confused Narada realizes that he looks ugly. He gets upset and heads to Vaikunta to see Lord Vishnu having a great time with Goddess Lakshmi and his new princess bride.
"I curse you Vishnu! You will lose your beloved, and endure the pains of separation from her. And in order to get her back you’re going to make friends with monkeys, and monkeys are going to be your helpers, and your saviors, and your devotees. And you think that it’s funny that I look like a monkey and I lost my beloved, here, is my curse!”
Lord Vishnu smiled when he received the curse. And said, “I accept your curse Narad, and I will incarnate as a human being and my Goddess Lakshmi will be my wife, and I will endure seperation from her."
5) Devdutta was in the same room as Prahlada when his father, the evil Hiranyakashyapa was killed by Lord Narasimha. Unfortunately; Devdutta's pregnant wife was present there too and she dies the moment she sees the ferocious presence of Lord Narasimha. The deeply affected Devdutta curses Lord Vishnu to get separated from his wife.
Based on all these curses, Lord Vishnu had to be born as a mortal on earth and be named as Lord Rama.
